| Gov’t loses Danding shares in San Miguel
The Sandiganbayan First Division dismissed Wednesday the government's claim to 17-percent stake in San Miguel Corp. making its chairman Eduardo "Danding" Cojuangco the undisputed owner of the stocks. The decision, which came after a two-decade dispute and is open to appeal, allows Cojuangco to sell his shares if he wants to. The shares originally represented 20 percent of SMC, before it was diluted by a rights offer. The government said earlier it wanted to sell next year another block of SMC shares representing about 24 percent of the company, after a final ruling on the ownership of the stake. The Court awarded that block to the government, but coconut farmers claiming the shares filed an appeal. In a 55-page decision, penned by Associate Justice Diosdado Peralta, the Sandiganbayan said Wednesday it dismissed the government's claim to the disputed shares due to lack of evidence.

SEC to consider CBOE rule on trading rights
U.S. securities regulators plan to consider this week a Chicago Board Options Exchange rule aimed at eliminating trading rights held by certain members of futures exchange CME Group Inc. Settling the issue is critical for the largest U.S. options market to complete a year-long process of converting from a member-owned organization into a for-profit, shareholder company, which would pave the way for an initial public offering. CBOE has been in legal dispute over the trading rights issue with CME, which was formed last summer after Chicago Mercantile Holdings merged with Chicago Board of Trade's parent CBOT Holdings Inc. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is expected to decide on Wednesday on whether to approve a proposed CBOE rule change that would eliminate eligible Chicago Board of Trade members from trading at the options exchange, according to a SEC meeting notice on its Web site late last week.

Prosecutors to Seek Death Penalty for 2 Men Accused of Murdering ...
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. Federal prosecutors announced Wednesday they will seek the death penalty for two men accused of murdering a family along Florida's Turnpike in 2006. Documents filed in federal court announced the possible death penalty if defendants Daniel Troya and Ricardo Sanchez Jr. are convicted. Their trial has been on hold to allow the U.S. Justice Department time to make its decision on capital punishment. The men have pleaded not guilty in the shooting deaths of 28-year-old Jose Luis Escobedo, his 25-year-old wife Yessica and their two young sons. Their bodies were found in October 2006 along the turnpike near Port St. Lucie. Authorities have said Escobedo was part of a large drug trafficking ring that included the two alleged killers.
Lawsuit settled over derailed Sallie Mae deal
Sallie Mae, the embattled student-lending giant, reached a settlement Sunday over its scuttled $25 billion buyout, ending months of legal fighting that had cast a cloud over the company, according to people briefed on the agreement. The company, formally known as SLM, agreed to settle with its onetime buyers, which include the private equity firm J.C. Flowers & Co., JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America, in exchange for a deal to refinance about $30 billion in debt due next month. Both Sallie Mae's lawsuit and the buyers' counterclaims will be dismissed, and the merger agreement has been terminated, these people said. A spokesman for Sallie Mae declined to comment, as did a spokeswoman for the buyers' consortium. Since the near shutdown of the credit markets last summer, the company has been unable to issue new debt backed by its student loans.
Degree of difficulty about to increase
Just ask my wife, you have to call my name about 10 times to get a response. But to all the Thrashers fans I did get to meet out there, it was a pleasure chatting with you guys. I wish I could have grabbed a beer and hung out instead of actually working the events. Brendan: You raise a good point and one that has some merit. If the Thrashers decide they have to deal Marian Hossa, don't be surprised if they make another move to bring somebody back in. The Oakland A's are great at that around baseball's deadline. Rather than let someone walk in their contract year, they trade them but also pick up help so they can still contend. I think that's a pretty good strategy. Also, in reading the responses to Mark Bradley, I appreciated your thoughtful response. The same people who get mad about a negative story also get mad when they don't feel like their teams are held accountable.
